The Shox project began in 1984, when designer Bruce Kilgore was inspired by indoor track runners who seemed to “bounce” upon hitting the surface. After years of experimenting with mechanical columns, Nike launched the first Shox model in 2000. The Nike Shox Z Black brings this technology to an all-black colorway.
Shox technology became world-famous when Vince Carter wore Shox BB4s during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, in his iconic dunk over French player Frédéric Weis. The design is based on hollow polyurethane columns in the heel, usually four arranged in a square formation, which compress toward the center to return energy with every step. The Shox Z Black features this visible architecture in an all-black finish.
