The idea for Shox dates back to the 1980s, when Bruce Kilgore was experimenting with mechanical cushioning systems at Nike; the materials did not allow it to become a reality until the late 1990s. Nike showcased prototypes in 1997, but the breakthrough came in 2000 with the Shox R4, the first model in the series. The TL appeared in 2003 and took the system to the extreme: twelve columns distributed along the entire sole, hence its name, for the «total» Shox coverage from heel to toe.

In the TL, the midsole disappears as a concept: underneath are spring-like columns tuned to deliver a continuous rebounding sensation throughout the stride.
