Adidas Samba OG White Cardboard Gum — 1949, ice, and a gum rubber sole

Adi Dassler designed the Samba in 1949 with a very specific problem in mind: allowing footballers to train on frozen pitches. The solution was a gum rubber sole with a suction-cup tread that gripped where studs could not. The shoe was introduced to the world at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil — hence its name — and in the 1970s, with a lower profile and more padded heel, it became the definitive indoor football shoe. The White/Cardboard/Gum is its softest version.

The profile has not changed: leather on the body, suede on the T-toe, three stripes on the side, and that padded tongue that gives it away from a distance. Here, the white base is combined with the Cardboard tone — a warm shade between beige and off-white — on the T-toe and heel, while the gum sole completes the look underneath.
