Adi Dassler designed the Samba in 1949 so footballers could train on frozen pitches: kangaroo leather, a mid-cut design, and a gum rubber sole capable of gripping where nothing else could. It was introduced to the world at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. In 1972, the cut was lowered, heel padding was added, and a zoned sole was introduced, turning it into an indoor football icon. From there, it moved onto the streets and never looked back.

The upper has barely changed in decades: the size and position of the Three Stripes and the T-toe reinforcement over the toe box remain true to the original.
