The Bapesta debuted in 2000 as A Bathing Ape’s most iconic silhouette, with an origin marked by controversy: it is said that NIGO designed it after a project with Nike involving the Air Force 1 was canceled. The influence of that model is visible in the perforated toe box, sole, and cupsole, with the Bape Star taking the place of the Swoosh. This historical foundation served as the starting point for the collaboration with American DJ and designer Heron Preston, unveiled in May 2022.

This collaboration represents a full-circle moment for both parties: in 2015, Heron Preston had already designed a model called "Street Sweeper" directly inspired by the Bapesta. Only 10 pairs were produced, generating significant attention. Years later, both brands officially joined forces to reinterpret the classic Bape Sta in Heron Preston’s signature orange, while retaining the perforated toe box, cupsole, and Bape Star as defining elements of the silhouette.
