In 1980, Shawn Stussy was 25 and had a workshop in Laguna Canyon where he shaped surfboards. At night, he screen-printed T-shirts with the same signature he scribbled on the boards and sold them in local surf shops; in 1984, he partnered with Frank Sinatra Jr. to take the clothing further. That signature was not his own but belonged to his uncle, artist Jan Stussy, and today it is one of the most recognisable logos in streetwear.
