The LD-1000 launched in 1977 as one of Nike's first running shoes; LD stands for Long Distance. Its most striking feature was the dramatically flared heel: according to the theory Phil Knight recalled in Shoe Dog, it would reduce twisting on the leg and pressure on the knee. The idea proved problematic and Nike eventually discontinued it, but the silhouette became etched in the brand's history.
Under the flared heel is the waffle sole developed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, whose pattern was literally born from a waffle iron in his kitchen. The upper combines breathable mesh with suede overlays; here, Malachite green dominates the base, while Arctic Orange brightens the Swoosh and details.
