Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 1 in 1987 after seeing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a building that exposes its ducts, stairways, and painted pipes on the outside. He applied that idea to footwear by cutting away the midsole to reveal the Air unit, against the wishes of much of Nike, which feared it would look fragile. The result was the first sneaker with visible Air. Stadium Green adds an intensely sporty green to that foundation.
