Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 1 in 1987 after seeing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a building that exposes painted pipes, stairways, and ducts on the outside. He brought that transparency to footwear by cutting away the midsole to reveal the Air unit; within Nike, there was resistance because they feared users would interpret it as fragility. The model launched and became the first shoe with visible Air. Here, the silhouette receives a well-balanced four-color palette.

The Air Max 1 — low mudguard and Air window

Low profile, elongated Swoosh, and Air unit in the heel. The base combines white and Pure Platinum, a very light gray; Court Purple appears on the Swoosh, while Hyper Jade features in the details and lining. Two cool accents over two light neutrals, with neither one overpowering the other.
