When Nike introduced the Air Max 1 in 1987, it was the first time a sneaker showcased its air chamber. Tinker Hatfield got the idea from Paris’s Centre Pompidou, a building that exposes its stairs, pipes, and colorfully painted ducts on the outside, and applied it by cutting away the midsole. There was internal opposition: people feared that exposing the Air would make it seem fragile. The Sport Red revives the classic two-tone AM1 color scheme, the same one used by the original 1987 release.
