In 1987, Tinker Hatfield visited the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a building constructed inside out: pipes, staircases, and ducts left exposed and painted in bright colors. That inspired him to cut away the midsole to reveal the air chamber, something Nike executives rejected for fear it would look fragile. It was released anyway, giving rise to the Air Max 1, the first sneaker in history with visible Air cushioning. This version comes in Pale Ivory with Vintage Green, an archival palette rather than a flashy one.
The silhouette retains its low mudguard, elongated Swoosh, and heel air window. Here, a Pale Ivory and white base is combined with Bicoastal and Vintage Green overlays, two different greens that create depth without relying on harsh contrast. The cream midsole completes the aged effect.
