When Tinker Hatfield introduced the Air Max 1 in 1987, the proposal to cut away the midsole to reveal the air unit met strong internal resistance at Nike: there were concerns that customers would interpret it as a structural weakness. The idea came from Paris’s Centre Pompidou, whose design exposes pipes and stairways on the exterior. The model was released and became the first shoe with visible Air. This colorway combines deep anthracite with Pink Foam, a soft pink used as an accent.

Low profile, elongated Swoosh, and an Air window in the heel. Anthracite gray covers most of the mesh and suede upper, while Pink Foam appears on the Swoosh and select details. The contrast is controlled: the pink adds color without taking over.
