The JAPAN S is based on a model from the ASICS archive dating back to 1981 and reinterprets it with a contemporary twist. The brand's story began earlier: in 1949, Kihachiro Onitsuka founded his company in Kobe with the idea of lifting the spirits of Japanese youth through sport, and in 1951 introduced the OK basketball shoe with a suction-cup sole. In 1977, Onitsuka Tiger merged with two other companies to form ASICS.
