It is a modern take on the Gel-Kayano, one of ASICS's most beloved stability models, now featuring a palette that celebrates Brazilian football and culture.
In 1993, designer Toshikazu Kayano drew inspiration from the exoskeleton of the stag beetle to create a running shoe that was both protective and agile, giving rise to the Gel-Kayano. That first model combined GEL cushioning, a Duomax medial post for stability, and an upper that precisely wrapped the foot. The current Gel-Kayano 12.1 fuses the upper of the 2006 Gel-Kayano 12 with the sole of the Gel-Nimbus 17, featuring an upper inspired by European Gothic armor through its metallic structure and open-mesh underlays for ventilation. In Black Cilantro, that base is tinted black and green with metallic accents.
