Wales Bonner and Adidas began their collaboration in 2020, reinterpreting archive models such as the Samba, SL72, and Japan through an aesthetic that combines Afro-Atlantic heritage with understated luxury. After five years of working together, the designer took the unusual step of creating a completely new model for Adidas: the Karintha. This “Basketry” version brings the artisanal technique of hand weaving to the leather upper, in a dark brown shade that reinforces the piece’s handcrafted character.
The Karintha is built on a flat, narrow sole, visually descended from silhouettes such as the Samba but with an identity of its own. In this Basketry version, the dark brown leather upper is hand-woven in a basketry pattern, adding a highly distinctive three-dimensional texture compared with Adidas’s usual smooth uppers.
