In 1972, Bill Bowerman, Nike co-founder and track coach, poured liquid rubber into his wife’s waffle iron in search of a traction pattern that didn’t exist. That’s how the waffle sole was born, and with it the Moon Shoe, handmade for that year’s U.S. Olympic trials. Only twelve pairs were made, and they were never put on sale. It remained in the archive until it returned to the conversation in 2025, and Nike finally released it widely in 2026.
The profile is pure track: low, narrow, and streamlined. This Sail Black version retains the original construction, with a textured bone-colored nylon upper and black suede panels forming the Swoosh and reinforcing the toe and heel. There is no midsole underneath: the waffle sole works on its own, exactly as in Bowerman’s pair.
