It was designed by Kip Buck, the brand’s model maker and an ultradistance runner, after studying the mechanics of Kenyan distance runners who ran barefoot. The name and split toe come from Kenya’s Great Rift Valley and the fault line running through it; the model debuted in the country’s flag colors.
The separation between the first and second toes creates articulation in the forefoot and encourages a more natural stride; the Velcro strap across the instep replaces laces. What changes in this version is the material: satin adds a soft sheen across the entire upper in absolute black, including the Swoosh and strap, transforming a functional silhouette into a distinctly dressed-up piece.
