The Air Rift launched in spring 1996 and was Nike’s first tabi-style footwear. It was designed by Kip Buck, an ultradistance runner and the brand’s model maker, who wanted to recreate the sensation of running barefoot, drawing inspiration from the efficiency of Kenyan distance runners. The split toe, which separates the big toe from the others, was inspired by the Rift Valley fault in Kenya, which also gave the model its name. Its first reissue arrived in 2015, and it has continued to return ever since.
It is half sneaker, half sandal: a flat profile, no laces, adjustable strap fastening, and that split toe that makes it unmistakable from ten metres away. The Breathe version opens up the upper with open-knit technical mesh for maximum ventilation, while the leopard print turns an already unusual model into a clear statement piece.
