Sean McDowell designed the Air Max Plus in 1998, building on the Sky Air project that Nike had been developing with Foot Locker since 1997. The brand presented more than fifteen proposals before his won them over. McDowell sketched it while on vacation in Florida: the wavy TPU overlays recreate the movement of palm trees, while the rigid heel piece represents a whale’s tail. The lateral Swoosh, thinner and longer than usual, turned out that way because no one had taught him how to draw it yet.
