In 2015, Nike opened its archive to Chitose Abe, who founded sacai in 1998 after training as a pattern maker at Comme des Garçons alongside Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe. From that relationship, the LDWaffle was born at Paris Fashion Week SS19: the literal fusion of two late-’70s Nike silhouettes, the LDV and the Waffle Racer. The model was released to the public in May 2019 and became one of the year’s most anticipated launches. This version adds a third signature, that of Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design, on a Blue Void base.
Chitose Abe’s concept is layering: two Swooshes, two tongues, two sets of laces, folded panels, and a stacked midsole that stretches the silhouette upward. On the Blue Void, deep blue dominates the outer panel and contrasts with the lighter layers and the double lightning bolt from fragment design, the most discreet yet recognizable detail of the whole design.
