The Air Max Plus was born from a 1997 project called Sky Air, which Nike was developing with Foot Locker. More than fifteen proposals were presented before Sean McDowell’s design was chosen. He was a young designer who spent his days off on Florida’s beaches: those gradient sunsets and the swaying palm trees eventually became the wavy TPU overlays that define the model. It reached the market in 1998.
The TPU ribs running across the mesh are not decorative: they support the foot like an exoskeleton. The lateral Swoosh is thinner and longer than standard because McDowell drew it by hand without anyone having shown him the official template. In this version, the Iron Gray base and black details let the Light Liquid Lime flow through the gradient and appear in the TN logo on the heel.
