In 1971, Bill Bowerman, co-founder of Nike, was looking for a way to improve traction on a new, slippery urethane track at the University of Oregon that was injuring his runners. He found the answer in his kitchen waffle maker. He patented that polygonal lug pattern in 1972, and in 1974 Nike began producing the Waffle. The Waffle Racer arrived around 1977 as a revised version, with a lightweight EVA midsole and a slightly more stable base.
The silhouette is pure seventies runner: low profile, nylon with suede reinforcements at the toe and heel, an elongated lateral Swoosh, and a Waffle outsole that grips the ground. SE versions focus on more elaborate material combinations and color palettes than the standard model. This pair combines Moon Fossil—a muted sandy gray—with Sail, a warm off-white, in an entirely neutral color scheme.
