The idea for Shox was born in the 1980s through the work of Bruce Kilgore, the designer of the Air Force 1, who had spent years experimenting with mechanical cushioning systems capable of returning energy more efficiently. The combination that ultimately worked — high-resilience polyurethane foam columns between two TPU plates — was not achieved until 1997, and the first Shox shoe did not reach the market until 2000. It was one of the most ambitious technologies the brand has ever launched.
The Ride 2 evolved from the R4 with a softer midsole and added cushioning: in addition to Shox columns in the heel, it incorporated Nike Air units in the forefoot. That combination made it popular among long-distance runners.
