The idea for the Shox began in the 1980s, when Bruce Kilgore — designer of the Air Force 1 — started testing mechanical cushioning systems capable of returning energy more efficiently than foam. The materials were not ready until the late 1990s: Nike unveiled prototypes in 1997, and the actual launch came in 2000 with the Shox R4. The NZ is one of the models that inherited those columns and brought them to the streets.
Compared with the bulkier Shox models, the NZ keeps its upper relatively streamlined and lets the heel take center stage: the columns are exposed, visibly compressing with every step. In this colorway, Smoke grey covers the mesh and synthetic panels, while Fog tones lighten the midsole and the columns themselves.
