The Mambacita line was launched in 2022, following the tragic loss of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna in 2020, to honor the memory of “Gigi” through footwear. Since then, Nike has released a special edition every year around May 1, Gigi’s birthday, donating 100% of sales to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. This Kobe 3 Protro Mambacita continues that tradition, dressing the silhouette in the colors of the uniform Gigi wore at the Mamba Sports Academy.
The original Kobe 3, designed by Eric Avar and released in 2008, accompanied Kobe Bryant during the season in which he won the NBA MVP award. Its low-profile design, basketball-net-inspired TPU cabling, and diamond-patterned outsole — inspired by “Diamante,” his daughter Natalia’s middle name — made it one of the brand’s most technical and personal silhouettes. In this Mambacita edition, the predominantly black-and-white design is combined with metallic gold details and “GiGi” embroidered on the heel, alongside Bryant’s signature logo.
