By the mid-1970s, Bill Bowerman was already making American football boots, and by the early 1980s his team had developed specific silhouettes for every surface and position. The Field General was designed in 1982, and its name comes from the nickname given to quarterbacks. The expansion of artificial turf and new findings on injuries pushed Nike toward low-profile, lightweight silhouettes: this is one of them. It spent forty years in the archives until Nike brought it back in early 2024.
The upper is lightweight and streamlined, combining nylon and leather, with the waffle sole underneath that provided multidirectional traction on synthetic grass. This colorway replaces smooth leather with a Fauna Brown cow print on a light base, an animal-print detail that completely breaks with the model’s sporting origins and takes it into much more fashion-forward territory.
