The Cortez was Nike’s first major success. Bill Bowerman, the brand’s co-founder, designed it in 1972 as a running shoe for the Munich Olympics, and its decisive contribution was the cushioning: it was the first Nike shoe to combine a full-length midsole with a layer of spongy rubber beneath the upper.
