The Astro Grabber appeared in 1974 and was worn throughout the 70s and 80s on artificial turf, when AstroTurf was beginning to fill stadiums. Its design is attributed to Bill Bowerman, Nike co-founder, who responded to these new surfaces with his waffle sole. The model remained dormant in the archives for half a century until Emily Bode Aujla revived it for her first collaboration with Nike in 2024, after which it received a general release.
