The original Air Zoom Spiridon arrived in 1997 with a name of its own: Spiridon Louis, winner of the first Olympic marathon in the summer of 1896. It was designed by Christian Tresser, the same designer behind the Air Max 97, and its major innovation was Caged Zoom: a Zoom Air unit enclosed in a functional, protective plastic cage. The Cage 2, originally conceived for the Japanese market, appeared in 2003 with a Pebax cage surrounding the visible Zoom units beneath the sole, creating an appearance very similar to a coiled telephone cable. The Triple Black version gives it its most understated interpretation.
The silhouette is lightweight and streamlined, a direct heir to Nike’s lightweight footwear category, with a highly breathable mesh upper originally designed to let sweat and water escape during a marathon. In Triple Black, the entire design — mesh, reinforcements, cage, and sole — is rendered in black, so the focus falls entirely on the texture and relief of the cage.
