In 1994, Nike commissioned Sergio Lozano, a Nike ACG designer, to create a shoe for larger runners who needed more cushioning. The inspiration came on a rainy day in Beaverton, Oregon, as he observed how water eroded the earth beside a lake, leading Lozano to build the silhouette around the human body: laces like ribs, a sole like a spine, and layers of mesh and suede like muscle fibers. The Freddy Krueger edition takes that foundation into darker territory, with a play of red and green stripes that directly recalls the iconic horror character’s sweater.
The construction retains the features that made the Air Max 95 iconic: rib-like laces, a spine-shaped sole, and an upper made of overlapping layers of mesh and suede. In this version, alternating red and green stripes run along the side of the foot, evoking the style of the striped sweater associated with eighties horror cinema, with a striking contrast against the model’s otherwise neutral base.
