Designed by Bruce Kilgore and introduced in October 1982, the Air Force 1 was the first basketball shoe in history to feature Nike Air technology. At its launch, Nike announced that it cushioned impact 30% better and was 20% more durable than a standard shoe. To design it, Kilgore drew inspiration from a Nike hiking boot called Approach, whose lowered heel relieved pressure on the Achilles tendon. Six basketball stars of the 1980s — known as the Original Six — debuted it on the court. The Icon Green Apple colorway gives it a green look that doesn’t go unnoticed.
The profile is unmistakable: a wide, breathable toe box, perforations for ventilation, a padded collar, and that thick midsole hiding the Air unit. It was also the first time Nike used slip-lasted construction, with the upper stretched over the last before being joined to the midsole, giving it greater flexibility. In this colorway, premium leather is combined with Green Apple details that break up the model’s usual understated look.
