The 574 was released in 1988 by designer Steven Smith with a specific brief: to create an accessible sneaker for people who could not afford the 990 Made in USA line. Smith achieved this by combining models: he took a simplified version of the 576 upper and mounted it on the base of the then-unreleased 577. Its success was immediate, and almost four decades later it remains one of New Balance’s best-selling models. Shipyard is its most elegant blue-gray.
The construction has remained essentially unchanged: durable suede on the main panels, mesh in the ventilation areas, and that wide «N» covering the entire side. Here, the Shipyard shade —a deep blue-gray— covers the body, while Dark Silver Metallic appears on the «N» and the details, adding a restrained shine to a matte base.
