The 480 was born in 1983 and is far from an ordinary silhouette: it was the first basketball shoe made by New Balance, produced in Maine and worn during that decade by professionals such as James Worthy and M.L. Carr. Its cult following was built on elegant lines, a clean aesthetic, and those thick EVA midsoles. Following the success of the 550 relaunch in 2020, New Balance brought it back as a lifestyle model in 2021, and the Numeric skate version arrived in 2023.
The current silhouette brings together two models from the archive: the 1983 Pride 480, which was a high-top, and the BB680, its low-top version. The result is that clean eighties court profile, with well-defined panels and the side N as the centerpiece. This colorway features black with white panels and a white N, finished with a gum sole that breaks up the contrast and adds a warm touch.
