HOKA was founded in 2009 in Annecy, France, by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two trail runners from Salomon. Their idea went against the grain: at the height of the minimalist trend, they opted for oversized midsoles and maximum cushioning. The name comes from Māori, meaning “to fly over the earth.” Mafate is the trail family where that philosophy was first tested, and the Lite version of the fourth generation cuts weight to gain speed without sacrificing the cushioning underfoot.
The silhouette retains the brand’s characteristic high-volume midsole, but the upper is lightened as much as possible: fewer layers, fewer reinforcements, and a more breathable construction designed for high paces in the mountains. In this colorway, Truffle brown forms the base, Salt adds the raw contrast, and Vintage Yellow brightens the details—a warm palette closer to classic mountaineering than to the neon typically associated with trail running.
