The GEL-Kayano 14 was launched in 2008 and marked a turning point: it was the first model in the series not designed by Toshikazu Kayano, but by Hidenori Yamashita, who took over. Yamashita built the model around the concept of “flash,” reflected in its colors, lines, materials, and silhouette, and took the series from a markedly technical look toward something more streamlined. That year, it won the International Editor's Choice award from Runner's World. The Piedmont Grey Aqua is its most understated interpretation.
The upper is aggressive, packed with overlays and intersecting lines, staying very faithful to the performance aesthetic of the early 2000s. Yamashita incorporated as much GEL cushioning as possible into the forefoot without sacrificing the structure that had made the series famous, resulting in a first-class stability shoe. In this colorway, Piedmont Grey dominates the body, while Aqua brings the details to life.
