Peter Moore designed the Air Jordan 1 in 1984 for a rookie named Michael Jordan, and it went on sale on April 1, 1985. Jordan wanted to feel the court beneath his feet, so Moore lowered the midsole profile and opted for an all-leather construction, taking inspiration from Bruce Kilgore's Air Force 1. Nike expected to sell 100,000 pairs in the first year; it sold 1.5 million in six weeks. The Mid brings that architecture to a mid-cut design, while the SE finish adds materials and textures outside the standard catalog.
The mid cut retains the side panel, Swoosh, and padded collar of the original silhouette, with the Wings logo on the ankle flap. The Off Noir Chalk colorway uses a deliberately muted palette: a grayish Off Noir black on the main panels against the chalk tone of the base leather, with an off-white midsole. No harsh contrast, everything in the shadows.
