Yohji Yamamoto wanted to return to designing clothes that could be worn on the street, and in the late nineties he proposed the idea to Nike, which rejected it. He then took it to adidas, which accepted immediately: that is how Y-3 was born in 2002, with its first collection for spring-summer 2003, long before athleisure became a business. The Country is a seventies training model from the adidas archive, and here Y-3 gives it an all-black treatment.
The Country's original silhouette was low, sturdy, and almost military in appearance. Y-3 respects those proportions but removes the color: black leather from end to end, with the Three Stripes integrated in the same tone and Y-3 branding as the only distinctive detail. It is a minimalist interpretation that turns an archive sneaker into a contemporary fashion piece.
