The final prototype of the Superstar was completed in 1969 — adidas still keeps the original in its archive — and reached stores in 1970 as a low-top basketball shoe: an all-leather upper and a shell-shaped rubber toe, a lightweight solution to combat the wear suffered by elite players. It moved from the basketball court into hip-hop culture, where it stayed forever.
The Superstar II arrived in the late 1990s and early 2000s with its defining feature: the Fat Tongue, a much thicker, more padded tongue designed to provide comfort and presence when worn with loose laces, a look strongly associated with hip-hop and skateboarding in those years. This colorway dresses it in black leather with the Three Stripes and Scarlet red details, the most direct contrast in the catalog.
