The sneaker we know today as the Stan Smith was released in 1965 and did not bear that name for years: adidas named it the Robert Haillet, after the French tennis player who was then the face of its tennis division. At a time when almost all tennis shoes were made of canvas, its full-leather upper was a genuine innovation. Haillet retired in 1971, Stan Smith’s face took his place, and in 1978 the model was officially renamed after the US Open champion.
Its design is an exercise in restraint: smooth white leather, the 3 stripes rendered as rows of perforations instead of stitched strips, and a low-profile rubber sole. The Freizeit version — “leisure time” in German — gives the model an even more casual feel, while the Wonder White finish replaces pure white with a warm, slightly cream-colored white that softens the overall look.
