The initials SL stand for Super Light, and the model debuted at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as a competition shoe designed to deliver speed and agility on the track. It was the first in the Super Light line, the first to feature the trefoil logo, and that same year Fortune magazine selected it as one of the 25 best-designed products. Many adidas athletes reached the podium wearing the SL 72 instead of their competition shoes.
The original construction combined a nylon upper with suede reinforcements and a lugged rubber sole, all designed to reduce weight without sacrificing grip or support. The silhouette is low, narrow, and streamlined, with a slightly upturned toe. This pair in Core Black with Cloud White and Carbon details is the most understated version of all: predominantly black, with white Three Stripes and grey reinforcements.
