The SL initials stand for “Super Light,” and the SL 72 was introduced for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as a competition shoe: a featherweight trainer designed for the track. Its construction summed up the engineering of the era: a nylon upper, suede reinforcements in high-wear areas, and a serrated rubber outsole, all designed to reduce weight without sacrificing grip or support.
