The adidas Predator was introduced in 1994 based on a prototype by former Australian footballer Craig Johnston. After retiring prematurely in 1988, Johnston was coaching children in Australia when he came up with the idea of adding rubber fins to his boots; his first prototype literally consisted of tying rubber from a ping-pong paddle to a traditional boot with an elastic band. adidas initially told him it would never work, and Puma, Nike, Reebok, and Umbro also rejected the idea. When they finally launched it in Las Vegas, before the 1994 World Cup, it became a phenomenon. The Core Black with Cloud White brings that heritage back in its most understated version.
