The Handball Spezial was launched in Germany in 1979, designed for an indoor sport that was especially demanding on footwear: short bursts, sharp stops, and plenty of friction. That level of demand gave it a robust construction that proved timeless. In the eighties, with the explosion of the casual movement in British football, it stopped being just a handball shoe and became a symbol of working-class youth culture. Gary Aspden revived it in 2013 for the SPEZIAL project, and it has remained in the spotlight ever since.
