The adidas Forum was launched in 1984. Work had begun a year earlier, when French designer Jacques Chassaing decided to create a basketball sneaker by asking professional players directly what they wanted. adidas wanted a model ready for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic basketball tournament, and succeeded: the Forum took its name from the arena where all the games were played. It was also the brand’s first sneaker offered in a low version and one of the first to exist in high, mid, and low cuts.
The feature that defines the model is its criss-cross ankle system. Inspired by the rubber bands physiotherapists used to stabilize players’ ankles, Chassaing created the Criss-Cross Ankle System: an outer layer that wraps around the ankle and becomes the adjustable Velcro strap, designed to reduce the risk of sprains. In Cloud White with Royal Blue, white covers the body’s leather upper, while royal blue accents the three stripes, strap, and details.
