The BW Army was created in the 1970s as indoor training footwear for the German army; the initials BW refer to the Bundeswehr, Germany’s Federal Defence Force. Supplied to the West German army during the 1970s and 1980s, the original model had neither the three stripes nor any visible logo, as it was designed exclusively for military use. This Black Cracked Leather version reinterprets that utilitarian heritage with cracked leather featuring a distressed finish.
The model became popular in the late 1980s, when it arrived in large quantities at military surplus stores, and Adidas Originals officially revived the design in 2017. With the Black Cracked Leather version, the lack of branding and low-profile shape remain intact, while the cracked leather adds a more considered finish with plenty of character.
