ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 Triple Black: reviews, sizing and why all-black changes everything

A stability shoe you can wear with jeans without looking like you just walked out of the gym? That's the play with the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 Triple Black. It's the new generation of ASICS' best-known support model, this time without a single hint of color: upper, overlays and midsole all in black.

We've read reviews in Spanish and English, comparisons with the Kayano 32 and runner feedback to tell you what really matters before you buy: what's changed, how they fit and how to get the most out of them off the pavement.

The ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 Triple Black is the all-black version (style code 1011C167-001) of ASICS' flagship stability shoe. It debuts the FLUIDSUPPORT system and a dual-layer midsole with FF BLAST MAX over FF BLAST PLUS and an 8 mm drop: soft support for running, walking or a full day on your feet.

Kayano 33 vs Kayano 32: what's changed

The big change is in the support. The Kayano 33 replaces the 4D Guidance System of previous generations with FLUIDSUPPORT, which uses the midsole geometry and a kind of FF BLAST PLUS “fork” to center your foot without rigid parts. It corrects, but it doesn't force.

The cushioning gets an update too. Where the Kayano 32 used FF BLAST PLUS throughout the midsole, the 33 puts FF BLAST MAX on top for a softer ride, and FF BLAST PLUS underneath as a tougher, more durable layer.

What stays the same

  • Stack height: 40 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot, same as the 32.
  • Drop: 8 mm.
  • Weight: around 298 g in the men's version. Still a shoe with real presence.
  • Outsole: a mix of ASICSGRIP and AHARPLUS rubber, with good wet grip according to published tests.

Gel-Kayano 33 reviews: what runners say

Reviews agree on something unusual for the line: the Kayano 33 doesn't just feel secure, it also feels comfortable. Several reviews highlight a softer landing and a smoother toe-off than the 32.

What people love

  • A soft, protective ride for long, easy runs.
  • A wide, stable platform, highly recommended for overpronators and anyone who spends long hours on their feet.
  • A stretchier upper, with better lockdown at the heel and instep.

What doesn't win everyone over

  • The weight, which hasn't dropped with the new foam.
  • Some testers find the midsole firmer than expected and not very responsive for fast intervals.
  • Anyone coming from the 4D Guidance System may find FLUIDSUPPORT more subtle.

The recurring verdict: it's a shoe for easy miles, recovery and long runs, and a very solid option for walking or everyday wear. It's not a shoe for speed work.

What size Gel-Kayano 33 should you get?

According to reviews and user votes, the Gel-Kayano 33 fits true to size, just like the latest generations of the line. The general advice is to order your usual ASICS size.

If you have wide feet or your feet swell on long runs, keep in mind that ASICS also makes the Kayano in a Wide version. Before you decide, check the available sizes at Next Step.

Triple Black: the detail that takes it beyond running

The Kayano was born in 1993, created by Toshikazu Kayano, who took inspiration from the exoskeleton of the stag beetle: a hard structure that protects without sacrificing agility. It mattered so much that ASICS named the shoe after its designer.

Thirty years later, the Triple Black version hides all that engineering under a single tone. With no contrasting logos and no white midsole, the silhouette looks more compact and the mesh texture becomes the only visual detail. Plus, all-black hides the wear of daily use really well.

How to style the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 Triple Black

All-black is the easiest way to take a technical shoe to the street. A few ideas that work:

  • Urban gorpcore: black technical or cargo pants, a windbreaker and a cap.
  • Effortless everyday: dark straight-leg jeans, a gray sweatshirt and black socks.
  • Full monochrome: all black, from joggers to jacket, for a clean look that hits hard on social.
  • For travel: the cushioning and stable base handle full days of walking around the city.

Frequently asked questions

Do the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 run big or small?+

The ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 fits true to size according to reviews and user votes, so we recommend ordering your usual ASICS size. The upper is stretchier than in previous generations and holds the heel and instep well. If you have wide feet, there's also a Wide version of the model.

What's the difference between the Kayano 33 and the Kayano 32?+

The Kayano 33 swaps the 4D Guidance System for FLUIDSUPPORT, which guides the foot through the midsole geometry, and moves from a single FF BLAST PLUS foam to a dual layer with FF BLAST MAX on top. It keeps the 40/32 mm stack height, the 8 mm drop and a similar weight of around 298 g.

Are the Gel-Kayano 33 good for walking and everyday wear?+

Yes, several reviews highlight the Gel-Kayano 33 as a great shoe for walking, traveling or working long hours on your feet, thanks to its cushioning and its wide, stable base. In the Triple Black version, the all-black look also makes them easy to pair with streetwear without looking like a technical shoe.

What kind of runner is the Gel-Kayano 33 for?+

The Gel-Kayano 33 is designed for overpronators and for neutral runners who want a protective, stable shoe to rack up miles. It performs best on easy runs, recovery and long runs; for fast intervals, reviews consider it too heavy and not very responsive.
